Veterans Day

Veterans day was a few weeks ago.  I know, I know, I'm late to post this.  But it was an especially memorable day because Juliette asked her grospapa, a veteran, to come to school and talk about what it meant to be a veteran.

We showed up for a not very organized visit; but dad had things under control.  He stepped right up to the front of the class and engaged them with a question:  What are the four branches of the military?  Do you know, they knew the answer?  He talked for a bit about the army, and the first cavalry- his division- (perhaps you've heard of it, especially if you saw the Mel Gibson movie, We Were Soldiers). He said that they didn't use horses anymore, but rode helicopters instead; and then gave Juliette an insignia patch to pass around.  Oh boy, was she excited about that! Juliette still has the patch.  She has made replicas of it in several different colors, and won't let me - or Cosette- touch it.

All in all it was a short but memorable visit.  I mean, look at the smile on her face:

Thanks, dad.  It makes me happy to see that smile on Juliette's face.  And happy (belated) veterans day.

(Now, I just have to find a way to get mom in for a visit!)

I missed this post somehow and just saw it this evening. I was very moved by it. Grospapa is a quiet hero. We are grateful for his and all the other brave soldiers who give their service to our nation.
