Location, location, location.

I should just move my office into the playroom.

A few weeks ago Greg and I went out and did some furniture shopping, and bought a desk for me to use. He has a spacious and sunny office all the way on the third floor, next to the guest bedroom (read.... quiet and isolated). My desk is in the library, right down the hall from the kitchen.

I didn't think the girls would let me sit and work, but under threat of leaving the house for a quieter locale, they decided they'd rather have my company if not my attention. So here I sit (blogging, not working, shh don't tell). They are not bothering me, but they are both here in the library. There are no toys in the library; so to amuse themselves, they are taking all the books off the shelves and stacking them in random piles.

Part of me thinks "At least they are not bothering me, I'll leave them be." And the other part of me realizes that this is not good behavior and I should yell at them to stop. But you know that old saying "don't wake a sleeping baby"? My own saying goes "don't bring attention to yourself if your children are not paying attention to you" (unless of course they are supposed to be paying attention to you.).

It is a pattern. They won't play in their rooms, or in the playroom. They will play in whichever room I happen to occupy. That means that I can get things done; clean the kitchen, fold the laundry, etc. However, since they have a tendency to wreak havoc wherever they go, this can be counterproductive. As I clean one area of the room, they are systematically disorganizing the other.

Really, if they must be around me at all times, I should just move my desk into the playroom so they can wreak havoc on their own toys while I work. But then they'd think my desk was a toy, and the last thing I need is them scribbling all over my students' papers.

Some day I'll be blogging about how frustrating it is that they won't come out of their rooms. So for now I'll just take advantage of their distraction to do my work (ahem, blogging), and I'll clean up after them later.

I have the same challenge - the girls want to play in which ever room I'm in.

My office is next to their bedroom, so I tried putting a baby gate up at the door to my office so they can see me even if they can't get in. They just stared at me with sad little puppy dog faces.

Now I let them come in with me and play with a small basket of special toys that they only get to play with when they are in my office with me. They are entertained and there is only a small mess that gets cleaned up before we leave the room (and they leave my books alone).
